Parents and caregivers of children with disabilities in Sierra Leone face heavy emotional, financial, and practical burdens. This study highlights their daily challenges across regions and identifies the gaps in support systems needed to ensure sustainable care.

This study contributes to the Breaking Down Barriers knowledge agenda by uncovering the experiences of parents and caregivers of children with disabilities across Sierra Leone.

Through interviews and focus group discussions in all five regions, the research highlights the emotional strain, economic hardship, and limited access to essential services these families face. It also identifies region‑specific support needs, such as education and healthcare access in the Western region, microfinance in the East, business opportunities and shelter in the South, and social support in the North and North‑West.

The insights from this publication translate into concrete recommendations for strengthening emotional support systems, improving access to essential services, and expanding economic empowerment initiatives.

Key Recommendations

Support parents and caregivers through region‑specific interventions that strengthen emotional support, expand financial and economic opportunities, improve access to education and transportation, and enhance collaboration across government, NGOs, and community organisations.
