Girls and young women with disabilities face layered inequalities that limit their safety, participation, and opportunities. Understanding these gendered experiences is essential for designing advocacy and empowerment strategies that effectively promote inclusive development.

Knowledge developed through Breaking Down Barriers shows that gender deeply shapes the experiences of disability, with girls and young women facing a “triple discrimination” based on age, gender, and impairment. The study from Zambia highlights how social norms, stigma, and unequal power structures limit their safety, participation, and opportunities. These findings stress the need for gender‑responsive disability programming that actively accounts for the additional barriers faced by girls and young women with disabilities.
