Home pre‑schooling supports children with disabilities in developing essential communication, social, and foundational learning skills. These skills form critical preconditions for their successful inclusion and participation in mainstream education settings.

Knowledge from the Breaking Down Barriers programme shows that home pre‑schooling is a promising approach for preparing children with disabilities (CWDs) for inclusive education, especially in contexts where children lack essential skills such as braille literacy, sign‑language communication, writing ability, and socio‑emotional readiness.

The study identifies the core competencies needed for inclusion—braille, sign language, writing, and social skills—and describes effective strategies applied in the SEEPD and EDID programmes. These include socialization, demonstration, dramatization, and a community‑based approach, all contributing to skill development and greater family engagement.

Key Recommendation for Practice

Invest in structured home pre‑schooling supported by trained Community‑Based Rehabilitation workers, using socialization, demonstration, dramatization, and community engagement to build the essential communication, writing, and social skills children with disabilities need for successful mainstream inclusion.
